Character Information

Character Name: Sunako Nakahara
Character Series: The Wallflower (ANIME)
Character Age: Somewhere around 16-17
Character Gender: Female
Original Canon
Canon Point: Episode 17, just as Sunako faints in the ballet room.
Background Link: Save me, Hiroshi-kun!
Personality: Sunako’s a strange girl to say the least. Her obsession with the darker side of life is one of the key parts of her personality. After spending the last two years of her life locked in her room, only leaving for school, and watching what seems to be an endless loop of gore films with her anatomically correct mannequins, it’s reasonable to think someone would come out of that situation a little messed up. She constantly makes references to horror films, even having dream sequences where she’s chasing down teenagers with horror movie icons like Freddy and Jason. However, none of these references actually scare Sunako; each one is regarded fondly, as if she’s remembering something that made her happy. Of course, this makes Sunako extremely difficult to frighten.

The only way to truly scare Sunako is bringing up her appearance. As monsters, gore and death only make Sunako smile, it seems the only thing she’s is too afraid to look at is herself. Whenever she so much as glances in a mirror (whether forced to or by accident), Sunako is prone to panic attacks which will always lead her to fleeing to a dark place to recompose herself. In the worst cases, Sunako can actually sent into complete hysterics or even deep, suicidal depressions. In episode ten, Sunako is locked in a burning building which she could probably escape; however, before her attacker leaves, she refers to Sunako as a horribly ugly girl, telling her she isn’t worthy to be around her beautiful friends. This forces Sunako to, quite literally, lay on the floor and wait to die, all the while mumbling about how she deserves to die horribly for being born so hideous.

Needless to say, Sunako has extreme issues with self-esteem. She views herself as an ugly girl after being horribly rejected and mocked by her first love, and views all other people as far more attractive than her. It’s because of her rejection that Sunako became the lovable weirdo she is today, as well as so insecure it almost hurts. For example, when someone unfamiliar tries to look at Sunako’s face, Sunako flips her shit, scrambling back into the nearest dark space. Should someone actually be able to hold her down long enough to actually stare at her, she can become hysterical.

Her low self-esteem makes it hard for her to talk to others, especially those she dubs ‘radiant creatures’ - aka, people more attractive than usual. Whenever approached by another person, Sunako tends to shy away and mumble, trying to resume her two year record of complete social disengagement. When a ‘radiant creature’ approaches her, regardless of their gender, Sunako is prone to intense nosebleeds and, on occasion, sobbing from the incredible beauty. Even when someone tries to fix Sunako’s awful self-image with a make-over, she usually claim it’s pointless to even bother with someone like her, and tries to go back into a dark place.

Now, radiant creatures are a big deal for Sunako. Aside from the nosebleeds and the sobbing at the incredible beauty, it would seem Sunako hates these creatures of light, viewing them as a direct threat to the dark, as well as ‘too beautiful to live’. She even plots to murder Kyohei just to remove his beautiful presence from the planet. However, Sunako apparently believes that she, as (in her mind) the world’s ugliest person, is the one who should kill the creatures of light, as shown when she rescues her friends on numerous occasions. When Kyohei’s face is scratched with a pair of scissors by a gang of school bullies, Sunako goes into a rage, reprimanding the girls for damaging ‘his perfect face’. Later, though, she resumes dreaming about stabbing Kyohei.

While Sunako is certainly insecure, she’s definitely not a push-over. She has a huge temper , as shown by her reactions to friend’s complaining and attackers. Whenever someone says something she doesn’t like, Sunako has no problem with standing up and saying so - although she’ll usually mumble it unless pushed too far. She tends to enter screaming matches with Kyohei, something which also pulls out her frighteningly competitive side. When someone Sunako isn’t fond of does something, she has to do it better. During hot springs trip, Sunako and Kyohei play table tennis, which Sunako ends up taking far too seriously and ends up playing for several hours just so she can beat her enemy.

For a hysterical weirdo, Sunako is actually quite down to Earth, often working as the ‘straight man’ to her outrageous friends. While others suggest going on wacky adventures, Sunako’s the one who thinks everyone should just stay inside and watch a movie. When others have crazy get rich quick schemes, Sunako’s the one who tells them to get real jobs and stop being lazy assholes. She also wonders why Noi goes to such extremes and waste so much time making herself look good, believing there are more important things to do than worry about how you look.

Sunako can also be incredibly sweet when she’s not laughing at gore and dreaming of murdering you. She does housework without complaint, and when she scares Yuki with her intense refusal to be look at in episode one, she offers him a pudding as an apology. The fact she’s constantly saving her friends is another demonstration of her kindness, seeing as her life would be much, much easier without the four bishies - and, debatably, Noi - around. Don’t expect Sunako to become all cutesy, though. She has a healthy level of tsundere in her, and because of her low self-esteem, has trouble accepting gratitude, usually shrugging it off and mumbling about how it wasn’t a big deal.

Abilities: Being amazing at everything Sunako can cook, clean, play piano, speak conversational French, run incredibly fast, lift people twice her size with one hand and see fantastically in the dark. On the supernatural side, Sunako, on bad days, can make flowers wilt and windows shatter just by standing nearby. Since Wallflower takes shoujo cliches like this literally, it can be assumed that Sunako actually does have some form of psychic powers. Also, the characters react to the odd things that happen around her, instead of letting them go unnoticed as they would if it was an animation choice. For example, when Sunako first appears and wilts flowers in the garden, Yuki cries out that he had no idea someone could destroy flowers like that.

Sample Entry: BOOM! BOOM! Blood everywhere! Ehehehe!
